4 common types of filters |
According to REI, there a four common types of water filters that are most frequently used: gravity, chemical, pump, and light. If the water is murky or contains sediment a pre-filter may be needed in addition to the water filters listed below.
Gravity filters use a pair of containers, one hung higher than the other, and an inline filter. These filters use gravity to filter water from the upper container through the filter into the lower container. These filters make it easier to filter a larger amount of water. However, the containers can be difficult to fill when the water source is shallow. Chemical filters typically use chlorine or iodine to kill the bacteria, viruses, or protozoa in the water. This form of filtration is very inexpensive and easy to transport. However, it can take more than 30 minutes for the chemicals to effectively treat the water. And often, the chemicals alter the taste of the water. Pump filters use an intake line to pull water into a container. As the water is pumped from the water source, it travels through a filter into the container. These types of filter are very effective when water sources are underground or very shallow, but they can be very bulky. Light purifier have a pen style design and typically use UV light to clean water. These filters give a quick way to purify water. However for large quantities of water or murky water, it requires multiple treatments. Regardless of the type of filter that is used, always remember to follow the directions included with the filter and seek out clean water when you can. Standing water often contains chemicals and substances that the water filter is unable to remove. |
