THe Issue
Many schools in rural areas of Nicaragua lack clean water and sanitation. As a result, waterborne illness are common, and many kids cannot go to school because they are sick with diseases such as Malaria. Additionally, a large percentage of young girls drop out of school once they begin puberty. Due to the lack of sanitation, the girls do not have the means to clean themselves during menstruation, and menstruation is often seen as taboo. Therefore, for these young girls who miss school, the poverty cycle is never broken. However, we have partnered with our local rotary to help school and communities in Nicaragua get the sanitation supplies and clean water they need.
Jane Mirandette with Rotary International has focused on the water issues in Nicaragua for more than 18 years. Her project is mobile. Thus far, 16 schools in Nicaragua have benefited from Rotary's focus on putting clean water and sanitation systems in schools that lack toilets and septic systems. Their goal is to impact public schools in 35 communities. Mirandette's team focuses on placing toilets, septic systems and water tanks at the schools. They also install sinks in the classrooms not only for cleanliness, but as a means for clean drinking water. With these projects, they hope to further the education for girls in schools.

It cost approximately $1,500 to help Rotary fund improvements for one school and give the students the supplies and education necessary to access clean water and sanitation. Additionally, each ceramic water filter unit cost $40 to $50 and hold 40 liters. Just by donating a little, that donation could help young children and families live a little bit better and improve their home life conditions. |
